Here are some gin rummy strategies and tips for you:

Always discard the higher cards that cannot be melded - The reason behind this is simple, the higher the cards are worth more points in deadwood should you lose.

Do not speculate when picking up cards - For example, just because you have one card, do not pick up a discarded card in the hopes of finding the third card down the road. If you do this, you are taking a game of skill and turning it into a game of luck.

Keep track of the discarded cards - It is important to remember which cards have been discarded so when you pick up high value cards that you can discard them knowing that two queens have already been discarded and you have no chance of making a meld.

Discard a card that the other player cannot use - If the other player discarded a 9 of hearts, then you should discard an unwanted 9 or 10 of spades, diamonds or clubs.

Place preference on middle value cards - Cards like the 7, offer more benefits than other low numbered cards or face cards. They can be used in a greater number of ways and in longer runs.

Hold onto high scoring cards at the start of the game - You may be able to pick up the other player's discarded high scoring cards as well; therefore, you could reduce your deadwood count significantly.
